Installation
If you don't have the plug-in already installed, please proceed to step 5.
1. Open Capture One and select Edit > Preferences > Plugins
2. Select JPEGmini plugin and click the '-' button below the plug-in list
3. Close Preferences window.
4. Continue to the installation section below.
To install the JPEGmini plug-in into Capture One, perform the following steps:

6. Open Capture One and select Edit > Preferences > Plugins
7. Click the '+' button below the plug-in list
8. Locate the jpegmini.coplugin on your hard drive, and click 'Open'
To activate the license for your JPEGmini plug-in, perform the following steps:
1. Enter your activation code in the field at the top of the Plug-in manager window
2. Click 'Activate'
3. After a short wait the plug-in will be activated and the label will change to 'Activated'
Usage
The JPEGmini Capture One plug-in is implemented as an Open With and Publish plug-in,
before saving them to disk. To use the plug-in, perform the following steps:
OpenWith:
1. Open the Export Window by choosing File > Export Images > Variants.
2. Select 'Optimize with JPEGmini' in Open With section.
3. Set the file format to JPEG by choosing JPEG in the 'Format' pop-up menu and set 'Quality' to your desired JPEG quality (100 is recommended for maximum quality).
4. Make other settings such as export location, file naming etc. as desired.
5. Click the 'Export' button.
Publish:
1. Select Image > Publish > Export With JPEGmini
2. Set the file format to JPEG by choosing JPEG in the Basic > 'Format' pop-up menu and set 'Quality' to your desired JPEG quality (100 is recommended for maximum quality).
3. Make other settings such as export location, file naming, etc. as desired.
4. Click the 'Publish' button.
Nowadays we photographers spend as much time capturing the world around us with our cameras as we do sitting in front of our computer monitor working on Photoshop, Lightroom, Luminar, Capture One or whichever else is our editing software of choice. All these tools has become as much as our weapon of choice as our cameras are. Once fully immersed in the process of optimizing, tweaking, adjusting and overall making sure the resulting images look as awesome as we want them to be, hours might pass before we can call it a session. I for one do not feel too excited sometimes about the post-processing task.
Those extensive periods of time are all in the name of two words: photo quality. If I were to ask you, on a scale of 1-10, how important is photo quality to you? You would most likely answer me 15. Rhetorical question, right? You want to make sure you give your clients and show the world only the best of the best. Blurry shots, bad lighting, off-centered, poorly composed images, none of them will make the cut.
RAW, JPEGs and storage space

If you are like me – and millions of others -, you shoot exclusively in RAW. RAW is a file format that captures all image data recorded by the sensor when you take a photo. To put it in nerdy terms: “When a digital camera makes an exposure, the imaging chip records the amount of light that has hit each pixel, or photo site. This is recorded as a voltage level. The camera’s analog to digital circuitry now changes this analog voltage signal into a digital representation. Depending on the camera’s circuitry either 12 or 14 bits of data are recorded. So, if the camera records 12 bits of data, then each pixel can handle 4,096 brightness levels (2^12), and if 14 bits, then it can record 16,384 different brightness levels (2^14)”
Shooting RAW gives you all the flexibility in the world, since you are in full control over things like white balance, contrast, highlights, shadows, colors and saturation. RAW files are future-proofed, allowing you to return and edit again later with improved software, therefore using RAW file as the building block for your final image always yield the best resulting images. How many RAW images can you send in an email? How many websites use RAW images? The answer is none. At the end of the day, whether you shoot RAW or not, there is almost a universal truth to your workflow final steps: JPEGs are the output file of choice.
I never delete my RAW files, as mentioned before they can be re-edited many times over, and I’ve found myself in several occasions returning to some images to retouch them, either with a different editing tool or with the same one once I learned a neat new trick. Nevertheless, let’s face it, RAW files can be significantly large. It’s no secret that camera manufacturers have radically increased file sizes the past few years with sensors offering unequaled resolution and dynamic range. But the quality cost at a cost in file size. And believe me, size does matter, and has a price tag.
The folder container my RAW files has almost 67 thousand images, and shows no signs of shrinking. And I’m sure that’s a reality for many of you reading this. Download opto port devices driver. Additionally there’s also always the need for a backup, no photographer in their right state of mind would have years and years of images in a single location.
On top of that “necessary evil” I also keep my finally edited and exported JPEGs. At the end of the day they are the actual pictures people are looking at, and while I could go back to the editing software, open the RAW file with the same settings and re-export then again, that will be time consuming, and time is never on my side, despite what The Rolling Stones said. Enter JPEGmini
I first heard about JPEGmini around 2017, and obviously, I was very curious. JPEGmini is a patent-pending photo re-compression technology, which significantly reduces the size of photographs without affecting their perceptual quality. The technology works in the domain of baseline JPEG, resulting in files that are fully compatible with any browser, photo software or device that support the standard JPEG format.
JPEGmini creators claim the software to be capable of reducing the file size of standard JPEG photos by up to 80% (5X), while the resulting photos are visually identical to the original photos: “The JPEGmini algorithm imitates the perceptual qualities of the human visual system, ensuring that each photo is compressed to the maximum extent possible by removing redundancies, without creating any visual artifacts in the process. This enables fully automatic, maximal compression of photos with no human intervention required”
This technology has two components. The first is an image quality detector, which imitates the perceptual qualities of the human visual system, to determine the maximum amount of compression which can be applied to each individual photo without causing visible artifacts. The second is a unique JPEG encoder, which adapts the JPEG encoding process to the original photos, creating the most compact representation of the photos that is possible under the JPEG standard. Combining these two components enables JPEGmini aims to achieve an extremely high re-compression ratio of up to 5x, or 80% reduction on digital photos, depending on their resolution (See diagram below)
This is how the by the JPEGmini statistical tests were carried out: They took a group of 23 people (the standard mandates at least 15), and tested them for 20/20 vision and for correct color vision. The viewing tests were conducted in controlled lighting conditions, with calibrated monitors placed in front of a gray-colored wall. They showed the users 200 different image pairs, with a resolution ranging from 2500 pixels to 12 Megapixels, at 100% zoom (“Actual Size”). In each pair, there was one original image and one JPEGmini image, shown in random order. The task of the users was to identify which image had lower quality. This test is a “forced choice” test, meaning that users must select one of the images in each case, even if they both look the same.

About 50% of the users pointed to the original image as having lower quality, while the other half identified the JPEGmini image as having lower quality. Since the results were within a statistical error window around exactly 50% (random choice), they thus proved that the JPEGmini image and the original image were identical in the eyes of human viewers.
Now, statistical data aside you might be shaking your head and saying “Yeah, everyone selling something online will always say their product is the best out there”. And there’s truth to that. I thought exactly the same way, and approached JPEGmini with cautious. Fortunately they have a trial version which you can download straight from their website and take it for a test drive, and so I did. At that point I wasn’t concerned about the software not able to compress my images – there are plenty of others out there which can do so – I wanted to verify if their slogan of “Get the smallest image file size without compromising quality or changing your workflow”was real.
Does it work?
I’m afraid to say that the answer is a resounding YES. But let’s dive in a bit more about the how to.
JPEGmini is extremely easy to use, to the point of being foolproof. If you buy the JPEGmini Pro Suite, which will set you back 89 bucks, you can use it two different ways: As a plugin with Photoshop, Lightroom and Capture One, or as a standalone tool. To use it as a plug-in you’d need to download and install the pertaining plugins for whichever editing tool you are using. After that, the process is a breeze. If you choose the JPEG Mini Pro App the cost comes down to 59 USD, and you can only use it as a stand-alone app. I personally wanted the flexibility of using it both ways, hence I went with the Pro Suite. Your workflow and budget might dictate otherwise, and that’s a matter of personal preference. As I aforementioned there’s a trial version for you to play with.
The JPEGmini Adobe Lightroom Plug-in
As a rule of thumb we dread learning or adding new steps to our proven, consistent, rock-solid workflow. That’s a total no go. However the developers behind JPEGmini seemed to have taken that into consideration, as the use of the plug-in is completely seamless. You follow the one-time steps described at this location and you are all set. Please note you would need a download link which will be sent your way following your purchase of the JPEGmini Pro Suite. After completing the steps, and when is time to export your carefully baby-seated Lightroom edited images, you will see an image like the one below.
There’s nothing else to do, other than clicking the Export button. A simple and clean process that doesn’t require you to think about it. Some things to keep in mind if you are going down this path are:
- The JPEGmini Adobe Lightroom Plug-in requires Lightroom 5 and above for Windows and Lightroom 4 and above for Mac.
- The JPEGmini Plugin for Lightroom is added in the export dialogue and is the last step in the export workflow. That means all the presets, metadata and other parameters that have been set will stay the same. The only change will be in the image file size.
- While they recommend exporting in the highest possible quality (90-100%), whatever you feel comfortable with will be OK. The higher quality, the higher savings in final size.
I’ve added one before/after image below for you to compare with your own eyes. I purposely chose an image with a wealth of colors and nuances. The original photograph exported to JPEG in full high resolution was 24 MB in size, so I took that one and resize it to 1800×1200 pixels, at the highest quality and the same 300 dpi. That file ended up at 2.13 MB and the JPEGmini version of if came down to 750kb.
